Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, founded by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, and quickly became part of the Pacific Northwest’s fiercely independent underground scene. Their early momentum came through Seattle’s Sub Pop label, which signed the band in 1988 at a time when it was actively shaping what would later be labelled “grunge”. Sub Pop positioned Nirvana alongside peers like Mudhoney and Tad, promoting a raw, anti-commercial aesthetic that suited the band’s abrasive sound and ethos.

Nirvana’s debut album Bleach was released on Sub Pop in 1989, recorded for a modest budget at Reciprocal Recording with producer Jack Endino. The record leaned heavily on heavy riffs, punk aggression and bleak lyrical themes, drawing from hardcore punk and sludge metal rather than pop sensibilities. While not a major commercial success at the time, Bleach became one of Sub Pop’s most recognisable releases and a cornerstone of the label’s catalogue.

Early singles such as Love Buzz (a Shocking Blue cover) and tracks like Blew and Negative Creep helped build the band’s reputation through college radio, word of mouth and relentless touring. These Sub Pop-era releases established Nirvana as a standout act in the Seattle scene, laying the groundwork for their later evolution and eventual global breakthrough, while firmly rooting their origins in the DIY culture that defined Sub Pop’s early years.
